TREATMENT

TREATMENTS

01

Routine Podiatry

This includes removal of corns which are localised collection of hard skin.  Corns can be very painful especially if they are on weight bearing areas such as the heel and ball of the foot.  Neurovascular corns are particularly painful as they have nerve endings incorporated into the corn and sometimes chemicals such as acids are used to soften them and stop the bleeding.

Calluse is hard skin formation on a larger area on weight bearing areas and can be debriefed by scalpel. This procedure is usually pain free.

02

In growing toe nails
Symptoms of an ingrown toenail include a painful and swollen toe. A Toenail may curve into the side of the toe. This can either be caused by incorrect cutting of the nail or naturally involuted nails (sides of the nails are curved).   Commonly, the toe becomes infected and it is very painful. The long term treatment would be to carry out a minor surgery where the sides of the nail are cut and removed under Local Anaesthetic and phenolised (to make sure the nail does not re-grow at the sides).

03

Diabetic foot assessment

Foot ulcers are one of the main complications in diabetes mellitus.

Podiatrists are specifically trained to assess the nerve damage in the feet, identify specific foot health risks, and decide on a treatment and prevention plan.

04

Biomedical assessment
Involves an examination of the lower limbs, looking at their structure, alignment, strengths and weaknesses. It is important to examine the lower limbs as a whole because they are closely connected and pain in one area can be due to a weakness or structural problem in another area. A Podiatrist can then make or recommend the right orthotics(insoles) for the patient.

05

Orthotics
A foot orthosis is an insole which has been manufactured and customised for an individual, to alter the forces the body is subject to, by changing the alignment or impact of the foot during gait.  This change in the foot position can help to reduce stresses in the tissues of the foot and leg, and improve efficiency and function.
